Belote

Classic Belote

Take trump with your partner — 162 points a hand

Belote is France’s favorite card game: two teams of two, 32 cards, and a trump suit where the jack and the nine rule. Take the turned card or pass, announce your tierce, say belote-rebelote and race with your partner to 1,000 points. On Masa you play it at a 3D table — classic Belote, while Coinche and the Gulf’s Baloot have pages and tables of their own.

Play Belote online with friends

Belote needs four players, and Masa keeps the table full: invite your partner and two friends, or let bots fill the empty chairs — a friend can take a bot’s seat before the first call or when the next game starts. Chat on voice like at a café table, and keep a straight face when the belote comes.

How to play

  1. 1

Four players in two teams; partners sit across from each other. Everyone gets 5 cards, and the next card is turned face up.

  2. 2

In turn, take the turned card to make its suit trump, or pass. If everyone passes, a second round lets you name another suit; if everyone passes again, the cards are dealt again.

  3. 3

The taker gets the turned card and 2 more, everyone else 3: 8 cards each. The player after the dealer leads the first trick.

  4. 4

Follow the suit led. If you can’t, you must trump — unless your partner is winning the trick. When trump is led, or an opponent has trumped, play a higher trump if you can.

  5. 5

On the first trick, declarations are announced: a tierce (three in a row in one suit), a fifty (four), a hundred (five or more) or four of a kind (a carré). The king and queen of trump in one hand are belote-rebelote. Masa announces them for you.

Other versions of Belote

Same table, other rules: each version is a game of its own at Masa, with its own tables, rules and stats.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to trump when my partner is winning?

No. When your partner is winning the trick you may play any card — but when an opponent is winning, you must trump, and over-trump if you can.

What is belote-rebelote?

Holding the king and queen of trump: 20 points for your team, whatever happens to the contract. Masa calls “belote” and “rebelote” for you as you play them.

What is a litige?

When the takers score exactly as much as the other team: the defenders keep their points, and the takers’ points go to whichever team wins the next hand.

Can I play without declarations?

Yes — switch them off when you create a table. Belote-rebelote always counts.
