Klaverjassen

A version of Belote

Play or pass the trump, score roem in the tricks

Klaverjassen is the card game of Dutch cafés and family tables: two teams of two, 32 cards and a trump suit where the jack and the nine rule. A suit is offered — play it or pass — and the team that makes trump must score more than half the points, roem included, or it goes nat. Runs and four of a kind in a trick are roem, all eight tricks are pit, and a game is 16 deals. Rotterdam or Amsterdam rules: your table, your choice.

How to play

  1. 1

4 players in 2 teams, partners across. 32 cards, 8 each. The team that makes trump must score more than the others.

  2. 2

Trump: a suit is offered (clubs on the first deal). From the dealer’s left, each player plays it or passes; if all pass, the dealer’s left must name another suit.

  3. 3

Follow suit. Can’t? You must trump — even on your partner’s trick — and beat a trump already played if you can. When trumps are led, play higher if you can.

  4. 4

Roem in a trick goes to the team that takes it: three in a row 20, four in a row 50, four aces / kings / queens / tens 100, four jacks 200, the trump king + queen (stuk) 20.
