Bazar Blot

A version of Belote

Armenian belote: bid the bazar, kontra and kaput

Bazar Blot is the card game of Armenian courtyards and family evenings, at home and across the diaspora. Two teams bid in the bazar — a number from 8 and a trump, or Bo for no trump — and must take that many tens of points. Doubt them? Say kontra; they can answer sur. The first team to 301 wins.

At Masa, Bazar Blot is a game of its own right next to Belote: pick it in the games list, open a table and share its code or link with your friends, or sit at a house table. Bots fill the empty chairs, and voice chat keeps the table talking.

How to play

  1. 1

Four players in two teams, partners opposite; 32 cards, eight each.

  2. 2

The bazar: bid a number from 8 and a trump or Bo (no trump); your team must make that many tens of points. Each bid is a higher number; Kaput (25) promises every trick. An opponent may say kontra (×2), the bidders sur (×4); Bo doubles the stake.

  3. 3

Combinations count for the team with the best one: terz 20, fifty 50, hundred 100, four jacks 200, nines 140, aces 110, tens, kings or queens 100. Blot (king and queen of trump) 20.

  4. 4

Follow suit; over-trump a trump lead if you can; if you can’t follow, trump — unless your partner is winning or you can’t beat an opponent’s trump.
