Sto Odno (101)

A version of Crazy Eights

Pass 101 and you are out; queens change the suit

Sto Odno — Сто одно, “a hundred and one” — is the shedding game of Russia and Ukraine, played with the 36-card pack: five cards each, match the suit or the rank. A queen goes on anything and names the suit; a 6, a 7 or the king of spades makes the next player draw one, two or four — unless they answer with a card that fits — and an ace skips them. The cards left in your hand are written onto your total every hand: go out on a queen for −20 (the queen of spades −40), hit exactly 101 and you are back to 0, go over and you are out. The last player in wins.

How to play

  1. 1

Get rid of your cards — and keep your total low.

  2. 2

Play one card that matches the top card's suit or number.

  3. 3

    36 cards (6 to ace), 5 each.

  4. 4

Queen: goes on anything — name the next suit.

  5. 5

6, 7 and K♠: the next player draws 1, 2 or 4 and loses the turn — unless they play a 6, 7 or K♠ that fits, and it adds up.

  6. 6

Ace: the next player skips a turn.

  7. 7

Can't play? Draw one card and play it if it fits.

  8. 8

When the deck runs out, the pile is shuffled into a new one.

House rules

Pick any of these when you create a table; a table that changes none plays the rules above.

  • Exactly 101 — 101 is just a total — over it you are out
  • 100 → 50 — A total of exactly 100 drops to 50
  • Draw rule — Draw until a card fits
  • Game end — The first player over 101 ends the game — the lowest total wins
