Oklahoma Gin

A version of Gin Rummy

The up-card sets the knock limit; a spade doubles

Oklahoma Gin is the classic American variation of Gin Rummy: the first card turned up each hand sets how low your deadwood must be to knock — a picture means 10, a five means 5, an ace means gin only — and when that card is a spade, the whole hand counts double. Games usually run to 150 points.

At Masa, Oklahoma Gin is a game of its own right next to Gin Rummy: pick it in the games list, open a table and share its code or link with your friends, or sit at a house table. Bots fill the empty chairs, and voice chat keeps the table talking.

How to play

  1. 1

Two players. Arrange your cards into melds and keep your deadwood low. When someone reaches 150 points, the higher final score wins the prize pool.

  2. 2

Each player gets 10 cards. One card is turned up to start the discard pile.

  3. 3

The player who didn't deal may take the upcard first; if they pass, the dealer may. If both pass, the non-dealer draws from the stock.

  4. 4

On your turn, draw from the stock or take the top discard, then discard one card. You can't throw back the card you just took from the pile.

  5. 5

Melds are 3 or 4 cards of the same rank, or 3 or more in a row of one suit. Aces are low: A-2-3 counts, Q-K-A doesn't.

  6. 6

Cards outside your melds are deadwood: aces 1, number cards their value, J, Q and K 10.

  7. 7

Oklahoma: the first upcard sets the knock limit (an ace means gin only, pictures 10), and a spade upcard doubles the hand.
