Israeli Whist

A version of Batak

Bid for trump, then hit your estimate exactly

Every player bids exactly how many tricks they will take. Only an exact hit scores. All 13 cards are dealt. The dealer opens an auction for trump: 5 to 13 tricks with a suit or no trump; more tricks, or as many in a higher suit, win; a pass is final and the auction ends when three have passed after a call. Exact: 10 points plus the square of your tricks (3 tricks = 19). Missed: minus 10 for each trick off. A zero made scores 30 when the estimates total over 13, 50 under; a zero missed costs 50, then gives back 10 for each further trick.

Play Israeli Whist online with friends

At Masa, Israeli Whist is a game of its own right next to Batak: pick it in the games list, open a table and share its code or link with your friends, or sit at a house table. Bots fill the empty chairs, and voice chat keeps the table talking.

How to play

  1. 1

Every player bids exactly how many tricks they will take. Only an exact hit scores.

  2. 2

All 13 cards are dealt. The dealer opens an auction for trump: 5 to 13 tricks with a suit or no trump; more tricks, or as many in a higher suit, win; a pass is final and the auction ends when three have passed after a call.

  3. 3

The winner of the auction leads; everyone else then estimates their exact tricks. The last estimate may not make the total 13 (over or under).

  4. 4

Follow suit if you can; otherwise play any card. The highest trump wins the trick, else the highest card of the suit led.
