Koz Maça

A version of Batak

Batak without bidding: spades are trump

Koz Maça is the batak Turkish players reach for when they want to skip the auction: spades are trump from the very first card, so it is all about the play. Follow the suit and beat the highest card if you can, trump when you can’t, and every trick you take is a point. A table can switch on calls, where everyone says before the play how many tricks they will take.

Play Koz Maça online with friends

At Masa, Koz Maça is a game of its own right next to Batak: pick it in the games list, open a table and share its code or link with your friends, or sit at a house table. Bots fill the empty chairs, and voice chat keeps the table talking.

How to play

  1. 1

4 players, 13 cards each, 4 hands. The highest total after the last hand wins the pot (minus the 5% table fee); ties share it.

  2. 2

No bidding: spades are always trump. The player after the dealer leads the first trick; the winner of each trick leads the next.

  3. 3

Follow the suit that was led, and if you can, beat the highest card on the trick.

  4. 4

No card of that suit? You must play a trump — higher than a trump already on the trick if you can. With no trump either, play any card.

  5. 5

Trump can’t be led until a trump has been played on a trick (“trump broken”), unless you hold only trumps.
