Omnibus Hearts

A version of Hearts

The jack of diamonds takes 10 points off

Omnibus Hearts is Hearts with one bonus card: whoever takes the jack of diamonds subtracts 10 points. Every heart still costs a point and the Queen of Spades 13, so each hand you dodge the penalties and fight for the jack at the same time. Shoot the moon as usual; at 100 points the lowest score wins.

Play Omnibus Hearts online with friends

At Masa, Omnibus Hearts is a game of its own right next to Hearts: pick it in the games list, open a table and share its code or link with your friends, or sit at a house table. Bots fill the empty chairs, and voice chat keeps the table talking.

How to play

  1. 1

4 players, each for themselves. Avoid hearts and the Queen of Spades: when someone reaches 100 points, the player with the fewest points wins the prize pool (minus the 5% table fee).

  2. 2

Everyone gets 13 cards. There are no trumps.

  3. 3

Before each hand, pass 3 cards: to the left, then to the right, then across. Every fourth hand nobody passes.

  4. 4

The player with the 2 of clubs leads it. Nobody may play a heart or the Queen of Spades on the first trick unless they have nothing else.

  5. 5

Follow the suit that was led if you can; if you can't, play any card. The highest card of the suit led wins the trick, and the winner leads next.

  6. 6

You can't lead hearts until a heart has been played on an earlier trick — unless you have nothing left but hearts and the Queen of Spades.

House rules

Pick any of these when you create a table; a table that changes none plays the rules above.

  • Q♠ breaks hearts — Hearts may be led once the Q♠ is played
  • Points on trick 1 — Without clubs you may throw hearts or the Q♠ on the first trick
  • Passing — Rotate + hold · No passing · Always left · Rotate
