Huit américain

A version of Crazy Eights

Aces draw two, jokers four — never go out on an 8

Huit américain is how France plays Crazy Eights: a 52-card pack with two jokers, eight cards each. An 8 changes the suit, an ace makes the next player draw two and a joker four — answer with another ace or a joker and the pick-up grows. A 7 skips, a 10 plays again, a jack reverses, and you say “Carte !” with two cards left. You may never go out on an 8. The others write the cards left in their hands as penalty points, and when a total reaches 500 the lowest wins.

How to play

  1. 1

Get rid of your cards — and keep your total low.

  2. 2

Play one card that matches the top card's suit or number.

  3. 3

    52 cards and 2 jokers, 8 each.

  4. 4

8: goes on anything — name the next suit. It can never be your last card.

  5. 5

Ace: the next player draws 2 — unless they play an ace too, and it adds up.

  6. 6

Joker: goes on anything, the next player draws 4 — a joker answers aces and jokers (never an ace on a joker); the suit stays.

  7. 7

7: the next player skips a turn.

  8. 8

    10: play again.

  9. 9

    Jack: reverses the direction.

  10. 10

Can't play? Draw one card — your turn ends.

  11. 11

Down to one card? Tap Card! as you play — or draw 2.

  12. 12

When the deck runs out, the pile is shuffled into a new one.

House rules

Pick any of these when you create a table; a table that changes none plays the rules above.

  • Special cards — Ace +2 · Two +2
  • Draw rule — Draw and pass · One card · Until it fits
  • Shorter game — The game ends when a total reaches 300
  • Suit you hold — The 8 names a suit you still hold
  • Strict finish — No 8, ace or joker as your last card
