Blitz Chess

A version of Chess

A game clock of 3+2 or 5+3: fast and sharp

Blitz is chess against the clock: each side gets three minutes plus two seconds a move (the FIDE World Blitz control) or five plus three, and running out of time loses. There is no time for long thinking, so openings you know well and quick tactics win the day — a whole game rarely lasts longer than a coffee.

Play Blitz Chess online with friends

At Masa, Blitz Chess is a game of its own right next to Chess: pick it in the games list, open a table and share its code or link with your friends, or sit at a house table. Bots fill the empty chairs, and voice chat keeps the table talking.

How to play

  1. 1

White moves first. Each piece moves in its own way: the knight jumps, bishops go diagonally, rooks straight, the queen both.

  2. 2

Capture by moving onto an enemy piece. Your king may never be left in check.

  3. 3

Special moves: castling, en passant and promotion when a pawn reaches the last rank.

  4. 4

Checkmate the enemy king to win.

House rules

Pick any of these when you create a table; a table that changes none plays the rules above.
