Agonia

A version of Crazy Eights

Aces change the suit, 8s play again, 9s skip

Agonia — Αγωνία, “suspense” — is the card game of Greek and Cypriot family tables: a 52-card pack, seven cards each, match the suit or the rank. An ace changes the suit (never on another ace, never as your last card), a 7 makes the next player draw two — and another 7 on top makes it more — an 8 lets you play again and a 9 skips the next player. Call “Κάρτα μία!” when you are down to one card. The cards left in the others’ hands count against them, and once a total passes 100 the lowest total wins.

Play Agonia online with friends

At Masa, Agonia is a game of its own right next to Crazy Eights: pick it in the games list, open a table and share its code or link with your friends, or sit at a house table. Bots fill the empty chairs, and voice chat keeps the table talking.

How to play

  1. 1

Get rid of your cards — and keep your total low.

  2. 2

Play one card that matches the top card's suit or number.

  3. 3

    52 cards, 7 each.

  4. 4

Ace: goes on anything but an ace — name the next suit. It can never be your last card.

  5. 5

7: the next player draws 2 — unless they play a 7 too, and it adds up.

  6. 6

    8: play again.

  7. 7

9: the next player skips a turn.

  8. 8

Can't play? Draw one card and play it if it fits.

  9. 9

Down to one card? Tap One card! as you play — or draw 2.

  10. 10

When the deck runs out, the pile is shuffled into a new one.

House rules

Pick any of these when you create a table; a table that changes none plays the rules above.

  • Shorter game — The game ends when a total passes 50
  • Strict finish — No ace, 7, 8 or 9 as your last card

Frequently asked questions

Is Agonia the same game as Crazy Eights?
