French Rummy

A version of 51 Rummy

Open with a pure run, no pairs: France’s own rummy

Rami is the rummy of French kitchen tables: two decks with jokers, melds of runs and sets, and an opening of 51 points. The French way is stricter than most — your opening must hold a run without a joker, pairs never count, and going out in one turn (rami sec) doubles the others' penalties even after they have opened.

Play French Rummy online with friends

At Masa, French Rummy is a game of its own right next to 51 Rummy: pick it in the games list, open a table and share its code or link with your friends, or sit at a house table. Bots fill the empty chairs, and voice chat keeps the table talking.

How to play

  1. 1

Empty your hand with runs (3+ in a row, one suit) and sets (3–4 of a rank, all suits different). Two decks, 2 jokers. Lowest total after the last hand wins.

  2. 2

To open, lay melds worth 51+ in one turn. Until you open you can’t add melds or lay off on the table.

  3. 3

Open with a run without a joker, no pairs; going out at once doubles

  4. 4

Draw from the stock, or take only the previous player’s last discard — and use it the same turn (in your opening, or on the table once you’ve opened).

  5. 5

Jokers stand for any card. Once open, swap a table joker by giving the exact card it stands for.

  6. 6

Once you’ve opened you can’t discard a card that fits a table meld (a joker you may).

House rules

Pick any of these when you create a table; a table that changes none plays the rules above.
