Tawla 31

A version of Tavla

No hitting, checkers left count, first to 31

Tawla 31 is the long, no-hitting tawla of Egyptian cafés. Both players start in opposite corners and run the same way round; a single checker holds its point. Win a game and you score one point for every checker your opponent still has on the board — the set ends when someone reaches 31.

How to play

  1. 1

All 15 checkers start on one point in opposite corners and both players run the same way round. The set goes to 31 points.

  2. 2

Opening roll: each player rolls one die; the higher one rolls both dice and starts. Each game’s winner opens the next one.

  3. 3

No hitting: a single checker holds its point. You may neither land on it nor touch down on it in a combined move.

  4. 4

Your first checker must pass your opponent’s starting point before any other checker may move.
