International Draughts

A version of Checkers

10×10 board, 20 men a side, take the most

International Draughts is the 10 × 10 game of the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Poland and the world championships: twenty men a side, men capture backwards too, kings fly along the diagonals, and you must always take the most pieces. A long, deep game — Masa plays the official FMJD rules, notation 1–50 included.

How to play

  1. 1

Two players, 20 pieces each on the dark squares of a 10×10 board. White moves first.

  2. 2

Pieces move one square diagonally forward.

  3. 3

Capturing is mandatory: jump over an enemy piece onto the empty square behind it. Keep jumping while you can — a jump sequence must be finished.

  4. 4

You must take the most pieces you can — a king counts as one piece.

  5. 5

Plain pieces may capture backward too.

  6. 6

A piece is crowned only when its move ends on the far row; jumping through it doesn’t count.

  7. 7

Kings fly: they move any distance along a diagonal and can capture from afar, landing on any empty square beyond the piece they take.

  8. 8

Captured pieces leave the board only when the move ends: none can be jumped twice.
